Liverpool

Liverpool boasts over one hundred Grade l & Grade ll* buildings, with the number of Grade ll listed buildings pushing that number well over 2,000.

The oldest building still standing (now known as the Bluecoat Arts Centre) was built nearly 70 years after the date of this illustration, pretty much over the original 'Pool' inlet which was filled in to become Paradise Street, on the right in this illustration. The castle, centre stage here, is now (approximately) the site of the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in present-day Derby Square. The only other reminder of this period is the truncated remainder of a 'Sanctury Stone' buried a little way north along Castle Street.

In 2004 UNESCO designated several areas a World Heritage Site, known collectively as the
Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City.
