Africa.

My first taste of, no: smell; my first smell of Africa came quite late in life.  Returning to England after a long-ish spell in North America I chose to re-visit Australia, then continue home via the unknown - to me, then - Africa.  So glad I did.  It rocks!

My knowledge is limited to just a few sub-sahel countries, but all are startling in their own ways.  Sadly, Mr Mugabe seems to have stamped his own dystopian view onto some of Zimbabwe's functionaries (I had a brief run-in with army personnel near Harare), but most of the population await his demise - as do we all - with barely concealed glee.  A clever man unhappily overrun by idiot sycophants, he pissed all over his potential years ago; sadly for him, tragically for his country.

I mentioned somewhere else the spectacular finality (I know no better term) of Nigerian car wrecks, in the context of riding a motorcycle without a helmet - my preferred choice.  This photo - a fairly typical sight along Nigeria's highways - proves that wearing a helmet is not much of a bromide if your number is up!

These pages are barely started yet, but can I say that Nigeria is one of the most exhilarating places on earth.  Everything you have read (excluding those hokey emails from 'millionaire' widows & Government ministers) is correct; most of what you assume is not far from the truth either but...
The sheer energy of the place, the good humour of everyone you meet (apart from politicians, but they're the same everywhere) is intoxicating.
EVERYBODY should go there at least once.  Leave your preconceptions, your inhibitions, but most of all your valuables, behind & join the party for at least a few days.  You will never regret it!

More when I find time...
